In a study of patients with spinal cord injury, larval debridement was quicker and more effective than conservative methods.
Traumatic and post-surgical wounds
Wounds that stall after injury or surgery. In one small study, no wound cleared with larvae before surgery became infected, compared with 6 of 19 that were not.
Is it right for the patient?
Larval therapy suits wounds that have dead tissue or slough, some blood supply and a moist wound bed. The final decision always sits with the treating clinician.
Clinical guidance commonly lists these as reasons for caution or for choosing another approach:
- Wounds with exposed blood vessels or organs
- Wounds that open into a body cavity
- Dry wounds with little blood supply
- Clotting disorders, or a known allergy to larvae or fly products
- Wounds with Pseudomonas infection that has not been treated first
What patients notice
Most people tolerate the treatment well. Some feel a tickling or crawling sensation, and a few report more wound discomfort. Pain relief can be given, and any pain should be reported to the nurse.
Infected wounds still need antibiotics
Larvae work alongside, not instead of, antibiotics where infection is deep or spreading. Your clinician decides what else is needed.
